PUTRAJAYA, June 14 — The claim that Malaysia will hire English teachers from Singapore is untrue, and is actually a volunteer programme, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said he discussed with Singaporean counterpart Lawrence Wong the possibility of establishing an assistance scheme for volunteers to teach English.
“What I talked about with the Singaporean PM was to organise an aid scheme of hiring volunteers paid by the Singaporean government to teach English in poor urban and rural areas as well as remote Sabah and Sarawak areas,” he said.
Anwar said this at the Madani Aspiration Gathering of Public Service Counselling Associates here today.
The media reported some leaders hit out at the proposal to bring in English teachers from Singapore, and questioned the government’s statement that it wanted to carry out austerity measures.
