PUTRAJAYA, June 10 — The labour force in April grew by 0.1 per cent, registering 17.12 million people from the 17.1 million in March, with the participation rate at 70.3 per cent, according to the Labour Force Statistics released today.
In a statement today, chief statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the number of employed people in April continued to rise, with a month-on-month growth of 0.1 per cent to 16.56 million people from March’s 16.53 million people.
“The number of unemployed people in April posted a slight decrease of 0.04 per cent to 566,400 people, against 566,600 people in March.
“The unemployment rate in April remained at 3.3 per cent, as recorded last month,” he said.
Uzir said the employees’ category formed 75.1 per cent of the total employed segment in April.
This group grew by 0.1 per cent to 12.43 million people in April (March: 12.42 million people), and the own-account workers’ category grew by 0.3 per cent to 3.04 million people (March 2024: 3.03 million people).
Uzir said 79.7 per cent of unemployed people were actively unemployed or were available for work and actively seeking jobs.
“This category shrank marginally by 0.03 per cent to 451,400 people (March 2024: 451,500 people).
“Among the actively unemployed, those who were unemployed for less than three months encompassed 61.7 per cent, while those who were unemployed for more than a year made up 6.7 per cent. He said the number of people outside the labour force in April rose slightly by 0.01 per cent to 7.23 million people (March 2024: 7.23 million people).
The main reason for being outside the labour force was due to family responsibilities (42.7 per cent), followed by schooling or training (41.4 per cent), he said.
