SINGAPORE, May 20 — The Singapore Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) expects “very heavy traffic” at both Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints before and during the entire holiday period from May 21 to June 23, due to Wesak Day on Wednesday and the June school holidays.
The ICA in an advisory said with enhanced security measures at checkpoints due to heightened threats, travellers should expect delays and factor in additional time for immigration clearance.
“We seek travellers’ understanding and cooperation to be patient, observe traffic rules, maintain lane discipline, and cooperate with ICA officers,” it said
The Home Affairs Ministry on Saturday said Singapore had improved security measures following an attack at the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor on May 17, which left two police officers dead and another hurt.
The ICA said during the last Good Friday long weekend, from March 28 to April 1, nearly 2.3 million travellers crossed the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, for a rate of over 455,000 crossings daily.
“This was an increase of close to 30 per cent compared with the same Good Friday long weekend period in 2023,” it said.
The agency said during peak periods, travellers departing by car had to wait up to three hours before they were cleared by immigration.
