KOTA KINABALU, May 17 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has urged the public not to share unverified information about the Ulu Tiram police station attack in Johor today.
The Unity Government spokesman said the people should seek information from legitimate sources, including from the authorities, to prevent the spread of false information.
“This incident is still under investigation. I’m confident the Royal Malaysia Police will provide comprehensive details later.
“Do not rush to speculate as it can lead to inaccurate and negative reactions about the incident,” he told reporters after attending a casual chat with the Madani Community here today.
In the 2.45am incident, two policemen were killed while another was injured. The male attacker, in his 30s, was shot dead at the scene.
Fahmi said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission can act against any party that spreads false information or disrupts local public order.
The minister conveyed condolences from the cabinet to the victims’ families.
“On behalf of the government and the cabinet, I extend condolences to the families of victims in the Ulu Tiram police station attack early this morning,” he said.
A post-mortem is being carried out on the victims.
Three bodies — the two cops and their attacker — arrived at the forensic department of Sultan Ismail Hospital in Johor at about 9am.
A check by Bernama found the compound was closely guarded by policemen.
Several relatives of the victims were also seen.
The cop who was injured in the attack was sent to the same hospital for treatment.
