JAKARTA, May 12 — Floods ravaged the Agam, Padang, and Tanah Datar districts of West Sumatra last night, resulting in 22 fatalities, seven injuries, and two missing.
In Agam, the calamity claimed 15 lives, with 11 casualties reported in the Canduang subdistrict and four in the Sungai Pua subdistrict, according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).
BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhairi said 90 buildings, including houses, were submerged in Nagari Bukik Batabuah, Canduang, and 60 residents have been relocated to a shelter in Nagari Koto Tuo, Koto.
“Rescue operations are ongoing in the affected sub-districts, including Canduang, Sungai Pua, and Koto, following heavy rains at 9pm local time,” he stated in a statement today.
In the Tanah Datar district, he said seven people have died and are undergoing identification at a local hospital following yesterday's floods, which affected 25 families, 24 houses, and 12 bridges.
Abdul Muhairi added that one person was found safe, while two others remain missing after floods hit Padang city because of heavy rains, causing the Lubuk Mata Kucing River to overflow at 10pm local time.
The country’s meteorology BMKG has issued a warning to be alert for extreme weather conditions of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds in several areas today.
These areas include West Sumatra, Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, Riau Islands, Bengkulu, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung Islands, Lampung, West Kalimantan, and Central Kalimantan.
