PETALING JAYA, April 22 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) collected approximately 4,239 metric tonnes of various types of recyclable goods throughout last year, said Mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon.

Of this amount, 1,917 metric tonnes were obtained via door-to-door recycling collection programmes in 85 areas.

"The programme, which began in 2020, involves 54,500 residential units with an average resident participation rate of 60.08 per cent to date.

"Its concept is that we provide yellow boxes to participants, and when these boxes are full of recyclable items, they can contact MBPJ for collection," he said.

Zahri was speaking at the Community Recycling Carnival Programme 2024 in Dewan Bankuet of the MBPJ Civic Hall today.

He added that the carnival aims to celebrate and appreciate Petaling Jaya residents' role and cooperation, as well as that of MBPJ's strategic partners like Nestle Products Sen Bhd and Tetra Pak Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

"We hope this programme can provide direct approaches to local residents regarding proper waste disposal methods and encourage recycling practices," Zahri said.
