SHAH ALAM, Jan 25 — The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) was put on alert after patrolling and monitoring within the vicinity of Sungai Gong in Rawang turned up a diesel-like odour.
It said the odour was detected at around 3pm, and in response Code Yellow was activated according to the Emergency Manual for Water Source Pollution to facilitate comprehensive investigation and immediate prevention/mitigation.
"Luas promptly took initial preventive measures by placing oil booms in Sungai Gong's flow to contain the spread of the oil traces. We have also increased the monitoring frequency at the site to every 30 minutes as a thorough observation measure," it said in a statement.
Meanwhile, mitigation measures are on standby, including raw water containment and opening dam gates, to expedite the flow of the contaminated water beyond the intake point.
"The distance from the odour's location to the nearest water treatment plant (WTP), specifically the Rantau Panjang WTP, is approximately 16.15 km. As of now, the situation is under control, and there are no issues reported.
"We are currently conducting an investigation to identify the cause of the oil traces, and are taking immediate cleaning actions at the site," Luas said.
