Vice-chancellors appointed for UM, UiTM, UMPSA

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 2 — The Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) announced today that Datuk Seri Prof Noor Azuan Abu Osman has been appointed as Universiti Malaya's (UM) new Vice-Chancellor for three years, effective from November 6.

A ministry statement said the appointment is based on Noor Azuan’s good leadership reputation and extensive administrative experience at the institutional level.

“The ministry is confident that with this appointment, he is capable of strengthening UM’s role as a premier academic institution in producing intellectual talent to meet the nation’s development needs,” according to the statement.

Noor Azuan graduated with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (BEng) from the University of Bradford, United Kingdom; a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in Bioengineering at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland; and is a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (FASc) and has been awarded the National Academic Award (AAN) in 2022.

In a separate statement, MOHE also announced the appointment of Datuk Prof Shahrin Sahib @ Sahibuddin as MARA University of Technology's (UiTM) Vice-Chancellor for three years, effective today.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Engineering from Purdue University West Lafayette, United States, before continuing his studies to the Doctor of Philosophy level in Parallel Processing at the University of Sheffield, the United Kingdom.

“He (Shahrin) has a highly respected academic reputation both inside and outside the country, thus can increase the university’s visibility in driving UiTM's excellence, especially in today’s era of disruptive technology,” according to MOHE.

In another separate statement, MOHE announced the reappointment of Datuk Prof Yuserrie Zainuddin as Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah's (UMPSA) Vice-Chancellor for one year with effect from November 1.

According to MOHE, this enables Yuserrie to continue driving UMPSA as a technical university based on technology and engineering to produce highly skilled graduates to meet industry needs.

“The ministry is confident that Yuserrie’s re-appointment as Vice-Chancellor of UMPSA can empower the national skills system through an advanced Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) approach as a result of synergy with industry players and stakeholders,” it said.
