APG 2022: Liek Hou' gold quest just a step away

HANGZHOU, Oct 26 — World champion Cheah Liek Hou’s quest to win the men’s singles badminton gold medal at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games (APG) looks imminent after the ace shuttler cruised into the final today.

The multiple world title holder, who competed in the SU5 (physical impairment), beat Taiwan’s Jen Yu Fang, the fourth seed in the world, 21 - 7, 21 - 9 in straight sets at the Binjiang Gymnasium today.

The 2020 Tokyo Paralympics gold medallist will face arch-rival Dheva Anrimusthi from Indonesia, ranked number two globally.

Cheah, winner of the gold medal at the 2014 Incheon Asian Para Games in South Korea, ended up with a bronze medal at the 2018 Games hosted by Indonesia in Jakarta-Palembang.

“Happy with my game as I could play according to the rhythm I wanted, although I am a little tired. Right now, I do not want to think about the final but just want to focus on playing my best game tomorrow,” he told Bernama.

Meanwhile, Dheva marched into the final after beating fellow compatriot Suryo Nugroho 21 - 11, 21 - 10 in straight sets.
