UN must reform for relevancy — Foreign Ministry

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 24 — Malaysia has renewed its commitment to the United Nations (UN) on its 78th anniversary today while emphasising the need for reforms to ensure the global body remains true to its original objectives.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Malaysia will continue to be a strong and dependable global partner, true to the universal values enshrined in the UN Charter and in line with the principles contained in Malaysia Madani, which are indispensable in creating and thriving a peaceful society.

"Malaysia continues to believe the multitude of challenges the world faces today can only be addressed through greater cooperation and a reinvigorated multilateralism system.

“To do so, overdue reforms need to be undertaken to ensure the UN remains fit for purpose,” read the statement.

UN Day is an annual celebration to mark the entry into force of the Charter of the UN, which led to the establishment of this august body on this day (October 24) in 1945.

Since joining the UN upon gaining its independence in 1957, Malaysia has consistently promoted the three founding pillars of the UN system: peace and security, human rights, and development.
