Singapore faces rapidly ageing society — Report

SINGAPORE, Sept. 29 — People aged 65 and above accounted for 19.1 per cent of the total citizens in Singapore by June, compared to 11.7 per cent in 2013, according to the Population in Brief released by the National Population and Talent Division Friday, reported Xinhua.

The proportion of citizens aged 65 and above is rising at a faster pace compared to the last decade because "baby boomers" born from 1946 to 1964 are entering the post-65 age range, said the report, adding that around 1 in 4 citizens will be aged 65 and above by 2030.

The median age of the citizen population also rose from 42.8 to 43.0 between June 2022 and 2023, according to the report.

Singapore recorded 30,429 citizen births in 2022, down 4 per cent from 31,713 in 2021. The resident total fertility rate reached a historic low of 1.04 in 2022, said the brief.

Singapore's total population stood at 5.92 million as of June, including 3.61 million citizens, 0.54 million permanent residents, and 1.77 million foreign residents, the document showed.
