BNM international reserves amounted to US$111.5 bln on September 15

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 — Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) international reserves amounted to US$111.5 billion (RM521.8 billion) as of September 15, 2023, compared with US$112.2 billion (RM525 billion) on August 15, 2023.

In a statement today, the central bank said the reserves position is sufficient to finance 5.2 months of imports of goods and services and was one time the total short-term external debt.

The main components of the international reserves were foreign currency reserves (US$98.9 billion or RM480.6 billion), International Monetary Fund reserves position (US$1.4 billion or RM6.5 billion), special drawing rights (SDRs) (US$5.7 billion or RM26.6 billion), gold (US$2.4 billion or RM11.2 billion) and other reserve assets (US$3.1 billion or RM14.5 billion).

Meanwhile, total assets stood at RM623.80 billion, comprising gold and foreign exchange and other reserves, including SDRs (RM522.12 billion), Malaysian government papers (RM12.76 billion), loans and advances (RM23.82 billion), land and buildings (RM4.14 billion) and other assets (RM60.96 billion).

BNM said capital and liabilities comprised paid-up capital (RM100 million), reserves (RM178.88 billion), currency in circulation (RM157.86 billion), deposits by financial institutions (RM168.75 billion), federal government deposits (RM11.93 billion), other deposits (RM37.58 billion), Bank Negara papers (RM34.08 billion), allocation of SDRs (RM29.96 billion), and other liabilities (RM4.68 billion).
