KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 — Modern methods of construction (MMC) should be introduced to accelerate the growth of public infrastructure projects and the development of affordable housing, said the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC).
Construction Productivity and Built Environment Nexus (COBEPN) champion Datuk Seri Michael Yam said a graduated implementation of MMC based on a definitive roadmap should be introduced throughout the construction and built environment phases.
MPC deputy director-general Zahid Ismail said productivity in the construction sector is not just a goal but a necessity for sustainable growth.
“Embracing MMC throughout the entire construction lifecycle is not only a forward-thinking approach but also a crucial step toward achieving higher productivity in the industry,” he said.
In a statement, MPC said one of COBEPN’s initiatives is the Productivity Step-Up programme, which aims to promote and encourage contractors to adopt MMC.
“The programme is conducted with technology providers that assist construction firms in adopting technology. Additionally, the programme encourages participants to recognise and evaluate any challenges encountered during construction activities and explore technological solutions to those challenges.
“These technologies provide innovative solutions and opportunities for reducing emissions while enhancing sustainability. They will also help reduce labour and speed up construction with better quality outcomes, which would indirectly lead to more efficient delivery of affordable housing,” it said.
COBEPN is under MPC and was established under the 12th Malaysia Plan as one of the government’s efforts to boost national productivity and economic growth via collaboration between the government, industry players, and academia.
