Sultan urges immediate registration of private tahfiz centres, Islamic schools

SHAH ALAM, Aug 29 — Selangor’s Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has urged unregistered private and independent tahfiz institutions to sign up with state religious authorities immediately.

The ruler said this will enable the institutions to receive the same aid and allocations as registered Islamic education institutions.

“I suggested the Islamic Development Department prepare paperwork to draft comprehensive policies and procedure for the registration of private and independent tahfiz institutions for each state,” the sultan said.

Sultan Sharafuddin, who is also National Council for Islamic Affairs (MKI) chairman, said at the council’s 70th meeting here yesterday.

On August 17, Persatuan Institusi Tahfiz Al-Quran Selangor (Pitas) said nearly 50 tahfiz institutions were fully registered according to guidelines for “whitening” religious schools, enforced by the state government from January 1, 2021.

Pitas chief Muhammad Hafiz Haneefa said 300 tahfiz centres and religious schools will be “whitened” in stages.

On June 27, the Selangor government extended the registration period for 55 independent religious schools.

In the run-up to the recent state polls, several civil society groups alleged the Selangor government had shut private religious schools in the state.

On July 6, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari clarified that not a single closure notice was issued.
