Asean energy leaders welcome calls to connect north, south, east subregions

BALI, Aug 25 — Asean Member States (AMS) energy leaders welcomed the call to initiate new multilateral power trading projects and bridge the gap by connecting the north, south and east subregions based on the recommendations of the Asean Interconnection Master Plan Study III (AIMS III).

AIMS III findings have shown the feasibility and potential of energy interconnection in the region, according to the 41st Asean Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM-41) declaration.

AMS also agreed to pursue the regional target for interconnection through the Asean Power Grid (APG) and Trans-Asean Gas Pipeline (TAGP), including the liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure towards 2045, in line with the 20-year timeframe of the Asean Community's Post-2025 vision.

The leaders are positive about the progress and advancement in APG, especially on the Laos - Thailand - Malaysia - Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP), as well as various bilateral interconnections, making cross-border power transfer possible for eight AMS.

The AMEM-41 also concluded with the region’s energy leaders showing commitment to pursue the establishment of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines Power Integration Project (BIMP-PIP) as a potential multilateral power trading project under the APG.
