SINGAPORE, Aug 14 — The Malaysian Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC) team emerged as overall champions of the SB20 One Design category at the three-day Singapore Regatta 2023 Championship which ended yesterday.
The team, led by Muhammad Uzair Amin, the team topped the "passage race" event on the first day of the tournament and finished the fleet race event in second place on the second day behind Team Tara.
Former Malaysian sailor Muhammad Uzair took home two gold medals in the International 420 division at two consecutive SEA Games.
Also sailing with Team Tara was the Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
Meanwhile, the MAF x MY Girls team triumphed by taking home "Line Honours" in the International Rating Certificate (IRC) category for crossing the finish line in first place in each race.
The MAF x MY Gadis Team represents a combination of sailors from the Malaysian Armed Forces and the MY Gadis Sailing Team.
However, the team that competed in the IRC class with six other boats had to settle for third place for the "passage race" event and fourth place overall after taking into account the handicap of each entry.
This is the first collaboration between the Armed Forces sailing team and MY Gadis female sailors who raced in the SY ZUHAL sailboat.
"This is the Armed Forces Sailing Team's maiden participation in the Singapore Regatta. The Team's performance is very impressive by winning Line Honours," said team leader, Lieutenant Commander Mohd Hanif Husain of the Royal Malaysian Navy.
With 17 sailors, the largest team was also chosen as the Best Visiting Yacht for exemplifying a high degree of collaboration, sportsmanship, and professionalism.
"This is the first official race in which the MY Gadis squad has competed with the Armed Forces team. Despite the fact that this two-day race is difficult because it took place in unfamiliar seas,” Adlina Maria Abdul Majid, the team's founder, is pleased with the outcome of the cooperation.
Datuk Seri Datuk Hamzah, the High Commissioner of Malaysia to Singapore, attended the award ceremony.
