SHAH ALAM, July 27 — The issue of extreme poverty among its residents is one of the focuses of Barisan Nasional's (BN) candidate for the Sungai Burong state constituency, should he win in the upcoming state election.
Mohamad Khir Ramli, 53, said he also intends to boost rural tourism and generate employment opportunities for locals.
"If the people vote for me, I will continue all the work done by the previous state assemblymen in defending the people's interests.
"Furthermore, I believe the agriculture sector can be revitalised with tourism, which can provide employment opportunities for residents to generate income," he told SelangorKini yesterday.
When asked about the chances of winning Sungai Burong, Mohamad Khir said being a local boy would give him the advantage in winning voters over and maintaining BN's control in the state constituency.
"I am intimately familiar with its customs, issues, and what its people want. That is what I am betting on to win the hearts of the people here," said the father of nine.
Mohamad Khir is a new face nominated by BN to defend the Sungai Burong in the upcoming state election.
The nomination day for the Selangor state election and five other states has been set to July 29. Early voting is on August 8, with the polling day on August 12.
