If you’re corrupt, you’re out! — PM Anwar

HULU KELANG, July 22 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured that not even cabinet members will be spared from facing justice if they are found to be involved in corrupt practices.

In a fiery campaign speech in Taman Keramat here last night, Anwar said he remains steadfast in his anti-corruption stance, assuring that such “heinous” acts would be purged from public service at all levels of government.

“I have been very clear since the beginning that anyone caught being corrupt will face the music. I don’t care if it’s a minister or which party you represent — you’re out,” he said to roaring applause from the crowd.

Anwar emphasised that he has consistently used his position as a leader to prioritise the welfare of the poor and disadvantaged, unlike his counterparts in Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Drawing a sharp contrast, Anwar claimed many PN lawmakers rely on nativist arguments, often asserting their actions and policies are solely for the benefit of the Malays, but this was often exaggerated for their political mileage.

“The same goes for these Malay tycoons who often plead for the government to help the Malays. If that’s the case, I again repeat my challenge to these people: How much money do you have, millions, billions? Then why don’t you give some of your fortunes to these people?

“Then you remain silent,” said Anwar.

Speaking on the state election, Anwar cautioned Selangor voters not to be drawn into provocation surrounding race, religion and royalty.

“There are laws in this country … (so) we must be mindful and not simply say things on stage simply because of the election.

“Please do not make provocative remarks, especially on the royals, as they are the umbrella of this sovereign nation,’’ said Anwar.

Anwar was referring to Kedah caretaker Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, who was slapped with two charges of sedition on July 18 for his provocative remarks against the Selangor sultan.
