Parties in unity govt represent Malaysia's 'true identity' — Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Parties that are currently part of the Unity Government, including Pakatan Harapan (Harapan) and Barisan Nasional (BN), represent the true identity of Malaysia.

BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this in urging constituents in the six states that will be heading to the polls on August 12 to cast their ballot for candidates representing the two coalitions.

The six states in question are Selangor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu.

"We want voters to pick a lineup that represents Malaysia's true face," Zahid said in his speech during BN's candidates announcement at the party's headquarters, here, last night.

"We have Malays, Chinese, Indians and Orang Asli, among others. In fact, our friends from Sabah and Sarawak will also come to the peninsular to help us win the state elections."

Zahid said under the new political landscape, Malaysians should reject any parties that play up racial and religious sentiments in a desperate bid to garner support, and instead vote for stability.

In this regard, he said it is crucial that the parties that make up the federal government also lead the states.

Meanwhile, the Umno president said the upcoming six state elections offer BN an opportunity to redeem its dignity following its heavy defeat in the 15th general election last November.

He expressed confidence that the coalition would fare better this time, owing to the fact that BN is now cooperating with Harapan.

"Previously, we went in solo and had to contest in three-cornered fights (in the last general election). This time, I am confident that victory will be on our side."

Separately, Zahid reminded all BN candidates not to demean or slander their opponents during the campaigning period.

"Instead, we will highlight what BN and the Unity Government can offer to the voters. This will be our method of campaigning."

The Election Commission has set August 12 for polling day for the six states, while nomination will be held on July 29.
