SHAH ALAM, July 21 — The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) has carried out tree-felling activities on 61 high-risk slopes to prevent landslides in the Ampang area, which have been carried out since June 22 for RM5.96 million.

Its Engineering Department director Zafrul Fazry Mohd Fauzi, said 23 contracting companies are involved in the tree-felling works, which are funded by the state government.

“Cutting down these trees will reduce the soil burden and movement, which could trigger landslides. This is part of MPAJ’s slope management plan, which has been approved by the state government to ensure the safety of residents living near these slopes,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Zafrul Fazry added the work is expected to be completed by the end of September.

“We initially planned for the work to start in April, but the tendering process took longer, which meant it could only commence in June,” he said.

On January 20, MPAJ announced its plan to cut down all trees on 61 high-risk slopes to reduce the soil load and prevent potential landslides, with work scheduled to commence in April.
