JOHANNESBURG, July 14 — South Africa's former president Jacob Zuma is probably heading back to prison, reported German news agency (dpa).
The South African Constitutional Court in Johannesburg upheld a ruling against the 81-year-old by the Supreme Court of Appeal on Thursday, which declared last year that an early release from prison on health grounds was unlawful.
The prison authorities challenged this ruling. However, the Constitutional Court now dismissed the application for lack of prospects of success.
Zuma was president from 2009 to 2018. The former head of state and leader of the African National Congress was sentenced to 15 months in prison in 2021 after refusing to testify before a committee investigating corruption and nepotism during his time in office.
But after less than eight weeks behind bars, he was released for alleged health problems.
Arthur Fraser, the head of the prison administration at the time and a close confidant of Zuma, had ordered the release.
Previously, the parole board had not approved Zuma's release.
