KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 — The Communications and Digital Ministry (KKD) is collaborating with Meta Platforms Inc (Meta), Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as well as the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to curb online crimes.

Its minister, Fahmi Fadzil, said the move was made following a rise in online fraud and gambling cases, as well as issues relating to religion, royalty and race being played up.

“Losses suffered by Malaysians from January to May 2023 via Meta platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) have almost exceeded RM330 million.

“This is a 25 per cent increase compared to the whole year in 2022,” he said in a Facebook post today after chairing a meeting with Meta, MCMC and PDRM at the police headquarters in Bukit Aman, here, yesterday.

Also present were KKD deputy minister Teo Nie Ching, ministry deputy secretary-general Ma Sivanesan, MCMC chairman Tan Sri Salim Fateh Din, CyberSecurity Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Amiruddin Abdul Wahab, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain as well as PDRM top management.

As a result of the meeting, Fahmi said Meta has expressed its commitment to have close cooperation with MCMC and PDRM to curb online crime.

"I believe that the cooperation established allows scams, online gambling and 3R issues on the Meta platform to be reduced," he said.
