KUALA SELANGOR, June 28 — The agro-tourism sector has the potential to draw both domestic and international tourists, which has led the state government to actively promote it, said state executive councillor for tourism Hee Loy Sian.

Apart from eco-tourism, he said the field is capable of attracting tourists as it has its own unique attractions and special features.

"One example is the Selangor Fruits Valley, which is a very unique place in the state featuring various local fruit plants and other activities, which are usually favoured by tourists.

"Following this, I will hold discussions with the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation (PKPS), and in collaboration with Tourism Selangor, it may be possible to establish a hotel in the Selangor Fruits Valley," Hee said.

The councillor was speaking at the livestock sacrifice presentation ceremony for the Orang Asli community in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha, at the Selangor Fruits Valley in Bestari Jaya, earlier today.

During the event, he also presented RM80,000 in Aidiladha assistance to Selangor and Federal Territories Department of Orang Asli Development director Mohamad Anis Othman, which will go to 13 villages in six districts.

Hee added that Selangor's success in retaining the top spot for domestic tourist arrivals is due to the Nak Bercuti? Jom Pusing Selangor Dulu! campaign, first introduced three years ago.

"The focus areas for domestic tourism include Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Sepang, and Kuala Selangor.

"Our figure of 22 million domestic tourists is contrasted with Kuala Lumpur, which stands in the second place with 16.9 million tourists. This means Selangor has become a focus not only for tourism but also for industries and investments," he said.

Selangor also maintained its number-one position in domestic tourist arrivals last year, at 22 million and significantly higher than other states.

Following Selangor and Kuala Lumpur are Sarawak with 15.5 million, Perak with 14.6 million, and Pahang with 13.2 million.
