SEPANG, May 21 — As part of its efforts to boost domestic tourism, the state government is planning to engage in one of the world's largest dredger development projects, said state executive councillor for tourism Hee Loy Sian.
With over RM10 million in allocation, he said the plan is currently awaiting approval and will be built in Dengkil.
"We are looking to establish more tourism centres, especially around Selangor's coast like in Tanjung Karang and Kuala Selangor.
"The (state) government has also approved the policy to develop the largest dredger, not only in Malaysia but also in the world," Hee said.
The councillor was speaking during the launching ceremony of the Selangor Hop-On Hop-Off (HOHO) tourist bus, at IOI City Mall in Putrajaya yesterday.
Separately, Hee said 350 chalets with the concept of an in-mangrove tree at Taman Alam in Kuala Selangor are currently underway.
The main focus is to develop ecotourism and agrotourism destinations, like the development at Pulau Ketam, and the proposal to build a hotel in the forest of Sungai Congkak.
"An offer was made to develop Pulau Ketam, at an estimated RM1 billion, as well as an offer to build a hotel in the forest by a private company seeking to invest and increase the tourist attractions there," he said.
Hee added the authorities are also upgrading several tourist centres including the Ampang Look Up Point at Hulu Langat, in collaboration with the Department of Forestry and Lipur Kanching in Taman Templer.
