SHAH ALAM, May 16 — The state administration has identified nearly 100 ponds and reservoirs for utilisation during flood or drought seasons under the Raw Water Security Scheme (SJAM) project.
Stata executive councillor for public amenities Izham Hashim said that the ponds and reservoirs serve as storage facilities to accommodate water supply in unforeseen circumstances.
“The total water volume in these ponds is approximately 34 million cubic meters, which is capable of providing supply to the entire Selangor for three months during the dry season.
“Selangor is the first state to do so and we are approaching the issue holistically and comprehensively to ensure a more secure water supply in the future,” he said during an interview on TV1’s Selamat Pagi Malaysia programme, today.
The Selangor Budget 2023 has allocated RM332 million to the SJAM project, including RM100 million dedicated to ensuring the continuous operations of water treatment plants in the event of contamination of the rivers.
The scheme also includes several other solutions, such as amendments to the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) Enactment and improving the surveillance by the LUAS Rapid Response Squad (Skuad Pantas).
