SEPANG, Feb 16 — Selangor is pioneering the methodology of solving the state's water supply problems via the Raw Water Security Scheme (SJAM).

State executive councillor for infrastructure Izham Hashim said it is currently the only state in Malaysia to implement a water supply support system, which is being built along Sungai Selangor and Sungai Semenyih.

"Alternative raw water sources from the Hybrid Off River Augmentation System (Horas) 600 reservoir in Sungai Selangor, as well as the Pond C retention pond in Sungai Semenyih will be capable of providing up to 67 per cent of the water supply to the entire state.

"These two projects are also able to provide water supply for a period of five days, in the event of any water shortages or pollution incidents," he said, following his field visit to survey the progress of Pond C's construction, at Jenderam Hilir earlier today.

Izham added the two raw water resource guarantee projects are expected to complete by the end of this year, and will be able to solve the water supply issues in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Putrajaya.

The construction of the two projects will also prevent water treatment plants from treating water taken from polluted sources in the rivers, until the pollution issues have been resolved.

SJAM is a state government initiative to address the issue of water supply disruption caused by pollution of raw water sources, especially in Sungai Selangor and Sungai Langat.
