SHAH ALAM, Feb 14 — The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) has identified 98 alternative water ponds that could potentially become the state's additional raw water source.

In a statement yesterday, it said 20 of these ponds have been gazetted under Protection Zones for control, under Section 48 of the Luas Enactment 1999.

"The remainder of the ponds are being gazetted, so that all alternative ponds that have been identified can be prepared for use whenever it is deemed necessary," Luas said.

The ponds remain under constant monitoring by the authority, in order to prevent any damages and disturbances to their quality and quantity.

"Luas has conducted a field visit to monitor one of the ponds, whcih is Tasik Biru at Kundang in Selayang. The checks alongside the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) was carried out to review the works that need to be implemented immediately so as to prevent the problem of overflowing and backflow.

"Cleaning works will be swiftly carried out to evaluate the source and cause of the backflow," it said.
