KBS provides RM30,000 grant to help uncover talents in chess

KAJANG, Jan 29 — The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) has presented the Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) with an RM30,000 grant so that it will continue holding chess tournaments at the grassroots level to find new talents capable of competing at the international level.

Its minister Hannah Yeoh said she hopes the MCF would host more such activities and work with schools to promote the game among students from all races.

"MCF is the first sports to receive a grant from us, so we hope this small contribution from KBS can help them to move forward," she said after the prize-giving ceremony of the school-level National Scholastic Chess Championship at Agro Bank training centre here today.

The three-day tournament that kicked off on Friday saw the participation of 400 students across the country in six categories.

Meanwhile, MCF president Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah Sanusi said he was thankful for the grant as the allocation could help them to develop the game in Malaysia.
