SHAH ALAM, Dec 1 — The Selangor government plans to allow the wearing of batik to the State Legislative Assembly sitting following the implementation at the Parliament level, says Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said the move was one of the efforts to promote Batik Selangor which features the ‘bunga tanjung’ (Spanish cherry) motif in its designs.
According to Amirudin, batik will be worn by state assemblymen, executive council members, civil servants and so on.
"However, the state legislative assembly has yet to change its rules (on dress code). When we amend the dress code to allow the wearing of batik, then we can wear the clothing,” he told reporters after the Batik Selangor launching ceremony for civil servants here today.
Amirudin said the wearing of the clothing would be introduced to the state’s grassroots including village heads in the future.
He said he believed the ‘bunga tanjung’ motif is comprehensive, neutral and not linked to any political party to allow all parties to wear batik with the pattern.
Meanwhile, state executive councillor for rural development and culture Borhan Aman Shah said the ‘bunga tanjung’ motif was chosen based on research carried out by the Selangor Malay Customs and Heritage Corporation.
