SHAH ALAM, Nov 25 — Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) has allocated approximately RM150 million per annum for the pipe replacement programme, which involves a piping network that measures between 110 to 120 km a year.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the water supplied to consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya is carried through a 30,008 km piping network.

“In 2021, a total of 1,910 incidents of burst pipes were recorded. To execute the piping system upgrade works, Air Selangor has allocated RM150 million a year for that purpose,” he said when tabling the 2023 Selangor Budget at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, here today.

Amirudin said pipe bursts occur due to several factors, including the age of the pipes, rusting, excessive pressure, and factors caused by third parties.

Other initiatives announced to address Selangor’s water issues include:

Working towards increasing the water reserves to 15 per cent. The water reserves stood at 13.6 per cent as of December 2021.

  • To implement the Rasau Water Supply Scheme through Air Selangor, at a total cost of RM4 billion.
  • To implement the Rasau Dual-function Water Supply Scheme Reserves Project for the Raw Water Supply Resource and Flood Mitigation (Projek Takungan Dwi Fungsi Bagi Sumber Bekalan Air Mentah Skim Bekalan Air Rasau dan Tebatan Banjir) at a total cost of RM1.8 billion, which will be funded via a direct grant from the Federal government.
  • A RM332 million allocation was approved under the Raw Water Security Scheme (SJAM) to assure the water treatment plants remain operational in the event water sources become polluted. For 2023, another RM100 million has been allocated for the implementation of this project.
