TANJUNG MALIM, Oct 20 — The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) is holding a Statistics Carnival from today to Saturday (Oct 22) at the Statistics Training Institute of Malaysia (ILSM) in Sungkai here, to celebrate the 2022 National Statistics Day (HSN) and a decade of ILSM since its establishment.
The ILSM, which was established in 2012, is the right wing of DOSM which acts as a development centre of human capital and is responsible for producing personnel knowledgeable in the field of statistics in addition to cultivating personalities steeped in integrity, dynamics, innovation and high performance.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin, in his speech at the HSN celebration today, said various programmes were arranged throughout the Statistics Carnival, including MyFuture Jobs Career Carnival, Jualan Bantu Rakyat Mobile Shop, Institute of Higher Education Statistics Debate and Stats FitDOSM Perdana.
"This clearly shows DOSM's commitment in its efforts to humanise statistics, strengthen statistical literacy and popularise the use of statistics in the community," he said.
Meanwhile, DOSM in a statement said the carnival is expected to have a big impact on the initiative of the department in ensuring the culture of statistics can benefit Malaysian families and further achieve the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030.
The statement said HSN is celebrated by all levels of society consisting of providers and users of statistics.
It said to statistic practitioners such as statisticians, policy-makers, academics and researchers, the HSN celebration is an incentive for data collection, statistical compilation and the provision of quality information.
And whereupon the community can feel the importance of statistics as a measure of determining a better and perfect life.
According to the statement, statistics also play a big role for the private sector in making business decisions and opening up opportunities for companies or businesses to always be competitive in an ever-challenging market.
DOSM said international investment and the country's position in the eyes of the world are also determined by using key indicators generated through statistics.
National Statistics Day was declared on October 20, 2017, and is celebrated annually.
