SHAH ALAM, Oct 3 — The Selangor National Sports Council (MSNS) will carry out a reassessment process as part of its efforts to improve the state contingent’s performance in future Malaysian Games (Sukma).

Its executive director Mohamad Nizam Marjugi said the council will review athletes’ performance in the 2022 Sukma, which concluded on September 25, to trace any weaknesses concerning training and preparations.

He said many Selangor athletes have managed to advance to the final round in numerous sporting events, but lost to their opponents and resulted in the contingent failing to achieve its gold medal target.

“We will do the reassessment and analyse how other states managed to achieve their medal tallies which exceeded their expectations. Doing so will help us to identify if this is due to the performance or technical factors,” Mohamad Nizam told SelangorKini recently.

He added that MSNS also plans to restructure its sports development programme and the athletes’ preparation programme for the biennial games in 2024.

Mohamad Nizam said Selangor also lost many potential athletes during the the two year period of the Covid-19 pandemic, which rendered them unable to compete in the 2022 Sukma.

Meanwhile, state executive councillor for sports Mohd Khairuddin Othman lauded the enthusiasm of Selangor's athletes which resulted in fifth place for the 2022 Sukma.

"Although it was not the top three position, I am nonetheless satisfied as the athletes did their best," he said.

This year's games saw Selangor earn 31 gold medals, 55 silver medals, and 44 bronze medals. The contingent was short of nine medals from its target of 40 gold medals.
