DOSM: Live births up 0.2 pct in second quarter 2022, Selangor highest

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 8 — The number of live births in the second quarter of 2022 increased by 0.2 per cent from 110,657 births recorded in the second quarter of 2021 to 110,858, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia's (DOSM) latest demographic statistics.

DOSM in a statement today said male babies recorded 56,801 births and female babies, 54,057 during the second quarter of 2022.

Selangor recorded the highest number of live births with 22,017 or 19.9 per cent while Labuan had the lowest with 413 births, it said.

DOSM said a total of 46,772 deaths were recorded in the second quarter of 2022, a drop of 6.9 per cent from 50,230 in the second quarter of 2021.

It added that 655 deaths were related to Covid-19, contributing 1.4 per cent of the total number of deaths in the second quarter of 2022.

DOSM also stated that Malaysia’s population was estimated at 32.7 million in the second quarter of 2022, an increase of 0.2 per cent from the second quarter of 2021 at 32.6 million.

Three states with the highest population were Selangor which constituted 21.6 per cent, followed by Johor 12.3 per cent and Sabah 10.4 per cent.
