SHAH ALAM, Sept 2 — Heavy rains, strong winds and thunderstorms are expected for five Selangor districts until later this evening, said the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia)

In a statement issued at 4.40pm, the agency said the districts include Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Hulu Langat.

“Other affected states and territories include Kuala Lumpur, Perlis, Kedah (Langkawi), Perak (Larut, Matang and Selama, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, Kampar, Bagan Datuk, Hilir Perak, Batang Padang and Muallim) and Kelantan (Jeli, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai)

“Similarly, Terengganu (Besut, Setiu, Hulu Terengganu, Dungun and Kemaman), Pahang (Lipis, Raub, Bentong, Temerloh, Kuantan, Bera, Pekan and Rompin), Negeri Sembilan (Jelebu, Seremban, Kuala Pilah and Jempol) and Segamat in Johor will also see inclement weather.

In East Malaysia, Sarawak affected areas include Sibu (Sibu and Selangau), Mukah (Matu, Dalat and Mukah), Bintulu and Miri, while in Sabah it includes Pedalaman (Kuala Penyu and Beaufort), Pantai Barat (Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Kota Belud), Sandakan (Kinabatangan and Sandakan) and Kudat.

The weather is expected to persist until 7pm.

MetMalaysia issues warnings whenever signs indicate a thunderstorm with a rain intensity exceeding 20 mm that is close to or is expected to occur for more than an hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning valid for a period not exceeding six hours for a single release.
