PNG's new parliament returns Marape as PM

SYDNEY, Aug 10 — Papua New Guinea (PNG)'s incumbent Prime Minister James Marape returned as the new prime minister after being elected unopposed in a parliament poll held in the capital Port Moresby on Tuesday.

Marape, a Tari Pori MP and leader of the PANGU Party, was elected with 97 votes for and none against in the first parliament meeting after the 2022 general election that started from early July, according to the PNG National Broadcast Corporation (NBC), reported Xinhua.

After the poll, Marape went to the Government House to be sworn in by Governor-General Bob Dadae.

"Building a resilient economy is fundamental. Building economic infrastructures is fundamental," said Marape in his speech after the election, according to an NBC report.

Marape has served as the eighth prime minister of the Pacific Island country since May 2019.
