FAM hopes 2022 Asian Cup will provide good exposure for national U-23 squad

SEPANG, May 29 — The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) is not setting a high target at the 2022 Under-23 (U-23) Asian Cup in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, but wants the national U-23 football squad to gain as much experience as possible in the tournament.

Its secretary-general Mohd Saifuddin Abu Bakar said FAM hoped that the team would be able to get past the group stage.

“Hopefully this competition can serve as a good platform for the squad to gain knowledge from the participating Asian teams.

“We have to be realistic in setting the target (for the U-23 Asian Cup),” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) here today.

Mohd Saifuddin hoped the U-23 Asian Cup, from June 1 to 19 would be a good exposure for the players and the U-23 squad would do their best for the tournament.

Malaysia will play against the 2020 champions, South Korea on June 2, followed by Thailand (June 5) and Vietnam (June 8) in Group C matches at the Lokomotiv Stadium and Bunyodkor Stadium in Tashkent.
