Selangor aims less than three pct unemployment rate this year

SHAH ALAM, May 12 — The state government has set its target of achieving an unemployment rate of less than three per cent this year, the same figure that it achieved in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari is optimistic this can be realised through Selangor’s Mega Job Fair this June which offers over 20,000 employment opportunities across multiple sectors.

“We have always set the target at below four per cent. In the fourth quarter of last year, the rate was 2.9 per cent. But in the first quarter of this year, it increased to 3.2 per cent.

“Even though that is still a comfortable figure, nonetheless we will try to further reduce it. Maybe to three or 2.9 per cent as before,” he said.

Amirudin was speaking at the launch of the Selangor Mega Job Fair and the state’s job portal selangorjobportal.com.my at Dewan Pro-Canselor Universiti Selangor (Unisel) earlier today.

Also in attendance were state executive councillor for youth development Mohd Khairuddin Othman and Unisel’s vice-chancellor Datuk Mohammad Redzuan Othman.

At the event, Amirudin said the job fair that will be held on June 11 and June 12 at the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) Convention Centre will offer employment opportunities for certificate holders.

He added that job seekers can register early to attend the interview session through the state’s job portal to avoid long queues and congestion.

“The event will gather employers and companies that are looking for workers. Some of the companies will conduct walk-in interviews during the event,” he said.
