PETALING JAYA, March 10 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has introduced an infrared headcount system at two Ramadan bazaar locations this year.
Its mayor Mohamad Azhan Md Amir said the system was introduced to control the number of crowds coming into the bazaars which subsequently helps to curb the spread of Covid-19.
He said two locations that will be using the system are the bazaars in SS 6/1, Kelana Jaya and Section 4 in Kota Damansara.
“The headcount system is being installed to control the crowd by ensuring that only two people are allowed to be at the same stall at any given time.
“To simplify this, if MBPJ provides 30 stalls for each location, this means the maximum crowd is 60 people at one time.
“These are the standard operating procedures that we have set out to ensure no congestion at the bazaar and thus preventing the spread of Covid-19,” Mohamad Azhan said at a press conference.
He was speaking after the launch of the 2021-2030 Petaling Jaya Entrepreneurs Development Strategic Plan at Dewan Sivik MBPJ earlier today.
Mohamad Azhan added the system is equipped with a dashboard display at the bazaars’ entrance, with information on the number of crowds that is displayed on the screen.

He said as of now, only two said bazaars were selected to use the system due to the high number of visitors recorded there every year.
“Last year, both bazaars recorded the highest number of visitors with 38,887 people in SS 6/1 and 29,187 people in Section 4, respectively,” Mohamad Azhan said.
In a related development, he said MBPJ has approved a total of 611 Ramadan bazaar trader applications in 20 locations within Petaling Jaya this year.
Mohamad Azhan said the operation of Ramadan bazaars will run from April 3 until May 2, starting at 4pm until 7pm.
“Visitors are advised to shorten their trips to the bazaars and return home quickly after they have buy their foods as we want to prevent the spread of Covid-19,” he said.
