SHAH ALAM, Feb 15 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) organised a Chinese New Year celebration yesterday, aimed at strengthening its relations with the local community.

Its corporate communications department said the annual celebration at Dataran Boulevard Seksyen 52 was attended by Petaling Jaya Mayor Mohamad Azhan Md. Amir.

"For the Chinese New Year celebrations this year, we presented the various performances of the different cultures and races in Selangor, asides from the Chinese community, in the effort to promote Petaling Jaya as a city of the arts in the state.

"Indirectly it helps to strengthen racial unity and inculcate a sense of fraternity in the local community," said MBPJ in a statement yesterday.

The celebrations, which saw participation by local residents and businesses in the area, was marked by lion dances, traditional dances, and the distribution of mandarin oranges to visitors and to premises in and around Seksyen 52, symbolising prosperity and wealth.

Earlier on January 28, MBPJ contributed RM250 each to 50 low-income families who earn under RM2,000 as part of the festive period, so as to lighten their burden in celebrating the Chinese New Year.
