Almost 1,000 Hijrah borrowers to get loan moratorium

By Sheeda Fathil

SHAH ALAM, Jan 3 — Up to 921 entrepreneurs under the Selangor Hijrah Foundation (Hijrah) who were affected by the recent flooding have been given a two-month moratorium on their loan repayments.

Its executive director Datuk Seri Mohamad Suparadi Md Noor said the postponement of repayment began on December 22 last year, with the aim of lightening the burden of those affected by the disaster.

"Applications for the moratorium were closed on December 29, and entrepreneurs who stand to benefit from it include those from the sectors of supplies, food and beverages, services, agriculture, livestock breeding, and processing.

"We hope this initiative will help to alleviate their burden, and the money meant for the loan repayment can instead be used to restore their post-flood lives and businesses," he said to SelangorKini.

On December 21, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced the deferment of loan repayments for two months, for Hijrah entrepreneurs affected by the floods.

He added this would have a financial impact of RM15 million on the foundation.

The extraordinary heavy rain between December 17 and December 19 resulted in twice the amount of rainfall than the previous high of 180mm, causing many locations in the state to be submerged in water.
