KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30 — Daily Covid-19 infections in the country continued to rise and approached the 4,000 level when 3,997 new cases were recorded today, compared with 3,683 cases yesterday, bringing the cumulative total now to 2,754,513.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the total new cases, 64 cases (1.6 per cent) were in categories three, four and five, while another 3,933 cases (98.4 per cent) were in categories one and two.
He said the daily cases involved 3,631 from local transmissions and 366 imported cases, while 3,984 cases have recovered, taking the cumulative recoveries to 2,681,390 cases.
"Meanwhile, 281 cases are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 155 cases require respiratory assistance," he said in a statement on the development of Covid-19 today.
Dr Noor Hisham said only three new clusters were detected making the total active clusters now at 221 clusters and the overall of 6,123 clusters, while the infectiousness rate (Rt) in the country was 0.95 as of yesterday.
On Covid-19 infection among flood victims, he said as of today, 15 positive cases had been recorded at temporary evacuation centres (PPS), while the total of positive flood victims stood at 442.
He said no increase in new clusters was reported involving flood victims in PPS.
However, he said there were 71 more cases of infectious diseases detected among flood victims today, including 26 cases of acute respiratory tract infections (ARI), skin diseases (30), acute gastroenteritis (AGE) (13) and two cases of hand, foot and mouth diseases (HFMD).
