Change in policy for non-Muslim burial management, as state govt hands out contributions for Christmas

SUBANG JAYA, Dec 15 — Approximately RM649,860 has been distributed to the Christian association, via the Selangor Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Sikh, and Taoist Special Committee (Limas).

State executive councillor for tourism Hee Loy Sian said out of the total, RM240,000 were distributed to three main Christian-related bodies, in conjunction with the Christmas Day on December 25.

These bodies, namely the Roman Catholic Church in Malaysia, the Council Of Churches Malaysia, and National Evangelical Christian Fellowship, each received RM80,000.

“Meanwhile, part of the allocation totalling RM311,860 was handed to 19 associations yesterday, with the remainder distributed earlier,” he said when officiating the state-level Christmas celebration yesterday.

The celebration, held at the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church hall, was attended by 150 guests.

Similarly, Hee said the state government is making changes to its burial site policy, in helping to manage the remains of non-Muslims from low-income groups.

“Before this the burial process was handled privately, but issues arose when certain groups could not afford to pay, since funerary costs could reach up to the thousands.

“Therefore, we want the local councils to manage this process in the future. We should collectively take care of the graveyards provided by the state government,” he said.
