SHAH ALAM, Nov 8 — The high tide phenomenon last week which saw the overflowing of seawater in several coastal areas in Selangor was under control, says the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department.
Its assistant director (Operations) Hafisham Mohd Noor said as of yesterday, the highest seawater level stands at 5.6 metres since the phenomenon began on Wednesday.
“Several houses were flooded but have waned shortly after, therefore no relief centres are opened for now.
“Based on past experience, floods will happen if the high tide exceeds seven metres or any incident of broken sea bunds. We are currently monitoring the situation along with other agencies,” he said when contacted by SelangorKini, today.
Hafisham said the high tide phenomenon is forecasted to recur in early December with the highest level is expected to reach below six metres.
“Therefore, residents living in the coastal areas should always be cautious of their surroundings,” he said.
According to the Meteorology Department forecast last week, Selangor will be hit by the high tide phenomenon involving areas in Klang, Kuala Langat, Sabak Bernam and Kuala Selangor.
Apart from Selangor, the phenomenon is also expected to hit Kedah, Perak and Johor during the same period, and will worsen if accompanied by strong winds, big waves and heavy rain simultaneously
