Badminton: Malaysia open postponed due to surge in Covid-19 cases

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 — The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have decided to postpone the Malaysia Open, scheduled to be held at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil from May 25 to 30, due to a surge in Covid-19 cases globally.

BAM, in a statement today, pointed out that the decision was taken after consultation with health authorities and Badminton World Federation (BWF).

"The collective decision was made keeping the safety, health and well-being of all the stakeholders in mind,” BAM said, adding that they have been working together with various ministries and government agencies as part of the Malaysia Open's organisational set-up since the turn of the year.

BAM said they had also taken every possible measure to adhere to all procedures, guidelines and protocols to conduct a safe tournament environment for all participants.

The Malaysia Open was supposed to be the second last tournament before next month's Singapore Open to offer Olympics qualifying points.

The Tokyo Olympics will be held from July 23 to August 8.
