Four men charged with murder of former Mardi director

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 — Four men were charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today with the murder of a former Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) director of Information Technology Dr Wan Hassan Wan Embong in a robbery at his residence two weeks ago.

Security guard S. Vickeswaran, 22, despatch rider P Kogilan and unemployed M Ravindran, both 23, and electrician T Sugu, 27, nodded after the charge was read out to them before Magistrate Wong Chai Sia (she), but no plea was recorded as the case comes under the High Court’s jurisdiction.

The four men, all unrepresented, were jointly charged with murdering Wan Hassan, 73, at Jalan Mambu, Bukit Bandaraya here between 3.35am and 4am last November 29.

They faced the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

The court set March 9 for mention.

Meanwhile, in the Sessions Court before judge Izralizam Sanusi, the four men pleaded not guilty to committing gang-robbery when armed with a machete and a hammer on an engineer, Mohd Muzaffar Zulkifli Martin, 33, who suffered losses amounting to RM38,000 on the same day.

They were charged with committing the robbery at a house in Taman Tiara Titiwangsa, Setapak here, between 4.12 am and 5.30 am last Nov 29.

The charge, framed under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code, provides an imprisonment for up to 20 years and whipping if found guilty.

Izralizam did not allow them bail and set March 9 for mention.
