SHAH ALAM, Sept 30 — Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) today received business zakat (tithe) from 31 corporate companies amounting to RM3.45 million.
Leading the companies' list were Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad Group, who handed over business zakat totalling RM951,200, followed by Advance Air Traffic Systems (M) Sdn Bhd (RM497,300) and Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad (RM330,264)
The zakat board's deputy chairman Datuk Dr Aziuddin Ahmad was present to receive the collection.
Meanwhile, LZS's chief executive officer Saipolyazan Mat Yusop said total collection this year was still far from the targeted figure, following the economic situation due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said the outbreak has also caused the number of asnaf (zakat recipients) to increase from 68,000 to 72,000 families, as many family heads had lost their jobs, and zakat paying companies were not able to contribute because their incomes were reduced.
"As such, nearing the end of December, LZS will continue to work hard to collect zakat especially business zakat," he told reporters after the zakat handing over ceremony 2020, here, today.
Saipolyazan said for the period of January to August last year, a total of 9,963 companies have paid their business zakat with the zakat board.
