Covid-19: New cases return to double digits

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 — Malaysia's number of new Covid-19 positive cases returned to double digits after 10 cases were reported today, eight of which were imported ones and two were local transmissions.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this brought the total number of Covid-19 positive cases in the country to 9,306, with 151 being active cases.

He said the imported cases involved a Malaysian and seven foreigners from India, the Philippines and Indonesia.

"The local transmissions involved one local and one foreigner. The case involving Malaysian was detected in Kedah from a screening on symptomatic cases.

"While the foreigner was tested positive for the virus during a screening conducted at the Bukit Jalil Immigration Detention Depot," he said in a statement here.

He added that there were 36 cases of recovery, bringing the cumulative number of recovered cases to 9,030 or 97 per cent.

Dr Noor Hisham said that thus far, there were eight Covid-19 positive cases being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU), six of which required ventilators.

"No deaths were reported today, keeping the death toll at 125 cases or 1.34 per cent of the total number of positive cases," he added.

Meanwhile, he said as of Aug 27, a total of 106,793 Malaysians have returned from overseas and from that number, 904 were tested positive for Covid-19 which represents 0.85 per cent of infection rate.

Of the total positive cases detected, he said 295 cases involved those who returned from Indonesia, Eqypt (93 cases) and Singapore at 70 cases.

"Malaysia will continue to intensify its surveillance and public health activities in all of the country's international entry points to prevent imported infections," he said.
