BANGKOK, July 10 — Thailand has recorded zero local Covid-19 transmission for 45 consecutive days and the authorities are beefing up border control to curb the entry of illegal immigrants due to the demand for foreign workers after businesses in the kingdom resumed operations from July 1.
Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) spokesman, Thaweesilp Wissanuyothin urged employers to legally employ the foreigners in the kingdom to curb the spread of Covid-19.
“Checkpoints will be set up to intercept illegal immigrants entering the kingdom to curb the spread of Covid-19,” he said at the Covid-19 daily briefing, here, yesterday.
Meanwhile, Immigration Bureau chief, Pol Lt Gen Sompong Chingduang said more than 3,000 illegal immigrants were arrested last month for trying to enter the kingdom.
“Prime Minister, General Prayuth Chan o-cha has instructed the Immigration Department and other security agencies to beef up border control,” he said.
Thailand has reported five new Covid-19 cases over the last 24 hours, all Thai nationals who returned from abroad and undergoing 14-day quarantine at state facilities, bringing the total number of cases to 3,202.
Of the five, four aged between 38 and 54 years, returned from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the other, a 22-year-old student, returned from Egypt.
Thaweesilp said no fatalities were reported over the same period with the death toll remaining at 58.
To date, 3,085 patients have recovered and discharged from hospitals while 59 remain warded.
