Fake news related to Covid-19 on social media

KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 — The following is an update from the Communications and Multimedia Ministry (KKMM) Quick Response Team on countering fake news related to Covid-19 on social media.

1. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba denies claims by certain quarters that the MCO cannot be implemented in Malaysia because Covid-19 is not gazetted as an infectious disease under the First Schedule, Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342). He stressed that Covid-19 is a new pandemic that his happening throughout the world and is categorised under Article 30, First Schedule, Act 342, that is "any microbial infection that threatens lives".

2. The Election Commission (EC) has denied ever issuing a statement urging Malaysians aged 18 and above to register as voters. The commission explained that voter registration will be carried out simultaneously with the registration of electors automatically after all EC preparations are settled, including preparation of amendments to the Elections (Registration of Electors) Regulations 2002, and related laws, preparation of SOPs and readying of a system that is expected to be completed at the latest by July 2020. The commission urges the public to refer to its official website www.spr.gov.my or Facebook or call 03-88927200 to get verified information.
