MCMC to closely monitor fake news on social media

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 25 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will continue to monitor the dissemination of fake information on social media sites following the current developments in the country.

In a statement today, the MCMC reminded the public not to disseminate unverified information which touches on racial, religious and the royal institution (3Rs) sensitivities.

“Any sharing of content that is false, offensive and threatening in nature is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“Offenders can be fined up to RM50,000, or be jailed for not more than a year or both, upon conviction,” it said.

MCMC also emphasised that enforcement would be carried out on the basis of complaints from the public in accordance with the provisions of the existing laws in a transparent manner, to protect the rights and interests of the people.

The commission urged members of the public to report any incident or content which touched on the 3Rs on social media to MCMC via Whatsapp at 016-220 6262 or email to mediasosial@mcmc.gov.my.
